Responding to the Call of Bahá’u’lláh

The Bahá’í teachings place great emphasis on personal transformation and service to humanity, viewing them as two inseparable aspects of human life. Shoghi Effendi explained this relationship in a letter written on his behalf:

“We cannot segregate the human heart from the environment outside us and say that once one of these is reformed everything will be improved. Man is organic with the world. His inner life moulds the environment and is itself also deeply affected by it. The one acts upon the other, and every abiding change in the life of man is the result of these mutual reactions.”

In light of this, Bahá’ís recognize a twofold moral purpose that lies at the heart of their lives: to foster their own spiritual and intellectual growth, and to contribute to the transformation of society. This purpose guides their efforts in all aspects of life. They seek not only to cultivate a life of prayer and reflection, but also to promote a spirit of devotion in their communities; not only to deepen their understanding of the Bahá’í teachings, but also to share them with others.

At the same time, they strive to overcome selfishness in their own lives while working, with humility and courage, to counter social and cultural forces that encourage excessive individualism and undermine solidarity among people.
