Bahá’í Holy Days and Festivals

Baha’is around the world celebrate many Holy Days and celebrations that commemorate significant events in the history of the Baha’i Faith, and reflect its teachings. Work is suspended in nine of these holy days in recognition of its significance. These Holy days commemorate events related to the lives of the Bab and Baha’u’llah, as well as, Naw-Rúz, Baha’i New Year, which coincides with the spring equinox.

These holy days are marked by spiritual character. Gatherings and celebrations open to all are held, during which prayers and writings are shared, all while fostering an atmosphere of fellowship, reflection, and unity.

Observed on the 21st of March, Naw-ruz marks the Baha’i New Year. Following the month of fasting, it symbolizes spiritual renewal, new beginnings, in which people gather to celebrate in a spirit of joy, and hope.
The most sacred and significant of the Bahá’í festivals, Riḍván is celebrated over twelve days, from late April to early May. It commemorates Bahá’u’lláh’s declaration of His mission in Baghdad and is often referred to as the “King of Festivals.”
Celebrated on May 23rd, this day commemorates the Declaration of the Baha’i in 1844, and the beginning of the Baha’i era.
Observed on May 28th, commemorates the Ascension of Bahá’u’lláh and is marked by prayer, reflection, and reverence.
Honors the execution of the Bab on July 9th, and serves as an occasion for reflection on the virtues of sacrifice and steadfastness.
Baha’is celebrate the Birth of the Bab, and the birth of Baha’u’llah over two consecutive days . These anniversaries occurred on successive days in the Islamic lunar calendar used in Persia at the time (the 1st and 2nd of Muḥarram), they are observed together as the Twin Holy Birthdays. Referring to these sacred occasions, Bahá’u’lláh stated that they are regarded in the sight of God as “one day.”
