Worship and Service
"Gather ye together with the utmost joy and fragrance and recite the verses revealed by the All-Merciful. By so doing the doors to true knowledge shall be opened unto your inmost beings, and ye shall feel your souls endowed with constancy and your hearts filled with radiant joy."
Bahá’u’lláhDevotional Gatherings
Prayer and devotion are an integral part of the Bahá'í pattern of life, both for the individual and for the community. Devotional gatherings, in which friends and neighbours come together to offer prayers and reflections, provide a welcoming space for all who long to experience the sweetness of communion with God, regardless of their religious, cultural, or intellectual background. Such gatherings awaken spiritual susceptibilities, foster bonds of love and fellowship, and cultivate a shared sense of purpose through meaningful conversations held in an atmosphere of mutual respect and genuine affection.
When these gatherings are complemented by acts of service carried out by those who participate, they contribute to the emergence of a pattern of community life in which the spirit of worship permeates daily existence and collective efforts are directed toward the spiritual and material prosperity of all.
The inseparable relationship between worship and service finds its fullest expression in the institution of the Mashriqu'l-Adhkár (House of Worship). At its heart stands a central edifice dedicated to the worship of God, surrounded by institutions devoted to education, healthcare, and other forms of service that contribute to the social and economic advancement of the community. Together, they embody the principle that genuine worship of God must be reflected in selfless service to humanity.
The Mashriqu'l-Adhkár is open to all, regardless of religious belief or background, inviting every soul to turn to the one Creator in prayer according to the dictates of conscience. It also serves as a space where individuals and families can consult together on the needs and aspirations of their neighbourhoods and communities. Those who gather there are united by their love for God, their love for humanity, and their sincere desire to contribute to the well-being and prosperity of all, without distinction.
Service to Society
Through selfless service alongside others, genuine human relationships are forged—relationships founded on love, friendship, and a shared commitment to the common good. Service can be understood as an expression of one's responsibility toward fellow human beings, enabling every individual to become an active participant in the life of society. It is a response to the innate nobility of the human being, inspired by the spirit of giving without expectation of reward, and a means through which both the individual and the community advance together.
Through wholehearted service, the twofold moral purpose of life is realized: to develop one's intellectual and spiritual capacities while contributing to the advancement of society. Such progress cannot be achieved in isolation, for every person is an integral part of the social fabric, and each individual's efforts should contribute to the well-being of all. As this shared purpose takes root, prejudice, alienation, and self-interest gradually give way to the cultivation of love, unity, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence.
Guided by this vision, efforts are undertaken throughout the country to foster a pattern of life that embraces the participation of all segments of society. This pattern seeks to respond to the developmental needs of people at every stage of life—from nurturing the spiritual and moral education of children, to channelling the energies of junior youth and empowering them to navigate the challenges of adolescence, and to creating opportunities for increasing numbers of youth and adults to explore how spiritual principles can be applied in their daily lives and in addressing the challenges facing their communities.
These efforts are rooted in the conviction that humanity is one and that every individual is a potential collaborator in the work of building a better world. Through collective action and shared endeavour, we come to recognize that our own well-being is inseparable from the well-being of society as a whole, and that lasting prosperity depends upon our collective commitment to the welfare and flourishing of all.
